The Throat Chakra

Last updated: June, 22, 2020

The Throat Chakra, also called Vishuddha, is the fifth energy centre and is the voice of our bodies. Located at the centre of the neck at the level of the throat, it is the portal to communicate and express our thoughts, emotions, and feelings of the other chakras through sound in a way that is authentic and true.

This energy centre has a special connection to the Solar Plexus and Heart chakras since our voice allows us to make ourselves known, and to express our love for ourselves and for other beings.

If we don’t speak our truth and act authentically, we lose our power and end up judging ourselves, which can lead to imbalances in the lower chakras.

A clear example of this is when we say yes but mean no, and then we moan about our choice. We are vocalising that we are not happy with our choice and, as a result, we beat ourselves up because of our inability to speak our truth, or perhaps because we think we have no choice.

The Throat chakra gives you the power to speak your truth and to make your own choices for your highest good.

HEALTHY THROAT CHAKRA

A healthy Throat chakra gives us awareness of our inner power, knowing that no one outside ourselves has power over us, and the choices we make.

However, sometimes things don’t turn out how we’d expected. We then ask ourselves; Why is this happening?, What’s the purpose of this?

It is at this point where the Throat chakra connects with the Third Eye chakra.

An open and balanced Throat chakra gives us faith in ourselves and a Higher Self. It allows us to release any control and fears, and trust that any unexpected new path is for our highest good.

The energy of this centre is flowing freely when you…

  • Flow in harmony and speak your truth from a place of enlightenment and love instead of resentment or hate.
  • Use loving and thoughtful words to communicate with others, even in difficult situations where arguments arise.
  • Your words are congruent with your actions.
  • Have the ability to read between the lines of what other people are trying to say.

UNHEALTHY THROAT CHAKRA

Often, our fears make us believe that we don’t have the power to create our experiences through our choices.

This way of thinking leads to negative thought patterns which can eventually cause blockages in the Throat chakra.

You might have some imbalances in the Throat chakra if you…

  • Struggle to express your thoughts, feelings, ideas, needs or emotions.
  • Find difficult to listen to others because you are busy expressing your own thoughts and ideas.
  • Tend to overeat even when you’re not hungry.
  • Find very difficult to speak your truth for fear such as fear of judgement or ridicule.
  • Have or had bulimia or anorexia.
  • Your voice becomes raspy when attempting to express yourself.

PHYSIOLOGY OF THE THROAT CHAKRA

The Throat chakra embodies body functions such as talking, hearing, swallowing, chewing, smelling, tasting and breathing.

We experience food through this energy centre by smelling, tasting, chewing and swallowing so it’s no surprise the Throat chakra is essential for our connection with food. It determines and chooses the food we feed our bodies.

FOODS FOR COMMUNICATION AND TRUTH

Foods that balance the Throat chakra are usually foods that combine the elements of the lower chakras: Root chakra symbolizes the earth, Sacral chakra, water; Solar plexus chakra, fire; and Heart chakra, air.

SEA PLANTS (Water – Earth)

Plants that represent the earth element but they can also live in the water are great sources for nourishing the Throat chakra.

Symbolically, these plants strengthen the connection between the Root (Earth), and Sacral (Water) chakras, and therefore, the Throat chakra can serve as an anchor to the lower chakras.

Sea plants are rich in minerals from the sea, such as iodine.

Iodine is an essential nutrient that helps to maintain a healthy thyroid gland.

Our thyroid gland uses iodine to make thyroid hormones, which help control growth, repair damaged cells and support a healthy metabolism. (1)

One of the symptoms of an iodine deficiency is swelling in the neck.

These sea plants include: nori, agar, dulsehijiki, and arame.

SOUPS, SAUCES AND JUICES (Earth-Water)

Soups are the perfect combination of the earth-based food and the element of water. Similar to sea plants, they also support the Root and Sacral chakras.

Sauces represent the connection between earth and water. Unlike soups of juices, sauces are served along with mains or puddings, providing extra flavour to the dishes.

Juices are excellent to connect the Throat chakra with all the lower chakras. Nowadays, we can make all kind of juices such as green juices, for the Heart chakra; red fruit juices, for the Root chakra, and orange or carrot juices, for the Sacral chakra. However, if we have juices regularly, they could cause an excess of energy in the Throat chakra, and eventually, an unbalance in the Solar Plexus chakra due to the increased amount of simple sugars.

HIGH-WATER FRUITS

The fifth chakra is sensitive to certain fruits since it is the house of our senses.

High-water fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumber, and grapes provide the Throat chakra with enough moisture to open it and make it receptive to and comfortable to speak the truth. Other sour fruits like lemons, limes and kiwi activate the Throat chakra to drive away untruths.

BLUE-COLOURED FOODS

Are there natural sky blue-coloured foods our there?! The answer is nope.

But since the Throat chakra is already feeding itself with the energies coming from the lower chakras, it doesn’t need to resonate with this colour.
